Short Course in Periodontics

 

   

   

 

The FGDP(UK)'s Short Course in Periodontics is a unique four-day practical course, enabling you to gain excellent training in contemporary periodontal management in practice.

This high-quality postgraduate dental course will give you the confidence to offer surgical treatment options for both periodontally-diseased and periodontally-healthy patients.

The course takes place in two parts, each being two days in length and held on a Friday and Saturday to minimise the amount of time that participants need to be away from their practice.

The theory and practical sections of the short course are divided as follows:

Theory

  • Adequately document a patients' periodontal health.
  • Assess risk factors for periodontal disease on an individual patient basis.
  • Understand the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and its management.
  • Effectively treatment plan patients presenting with periodontal disease within the context of a comprehensive restorative treatment plan.
  • Understand the role of the patient in disease control and how to motivate patients.
  • Use contemporary non-surgical techniques in disease control.
  • Recognise presenting conditions that require the use of antimicrobials.
  • Diagnose and effectively treat periodontic /endodontic lesions.

Practical

  • Understand the indications for surgical periodontal treatment.
  • Carry out basic flap surgery.
  • Perform root resection surgery.
  • Perform periodontal regenerative surgery.
  • Perform crown lengthening surgery.
  • Perform simple grafting surgery.

To be eligible for this programme, applicants will need to hold current registration with the UK General Dental Council (or equivalent in another country) and have been qualified for at least two years.

Philip Ower - Course Lecturer

was the Royal Air Force (RAF) Adviser in Periodontology, running the RAF School of Dental Hygiene. After leaving the RAF he worked in several specialist practices and, for 10 years, worked alongside the renowned Bernie Kieser at the Periodontal Practice in London. He now practices exclusively at the Briars Dental Centre in Newbury.

He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MGDS) and has served two terms on the Council of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) and was BPS President in 2015-16.

Phil was the Guest Editor for the August 2014 issue of the Primary Dental Journal on Non-surgical Periodontal Therapy. Phil has had papers published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Dental Update, Dental Practice and Independent Dentistry and has served on the editorial boards of Primary Dental Care and Dental Health. He is a Module editor on the eDen project for e-Learning for Healthcare, and edited the undergraduate textbook Practical Periodontics published by Elsevier in 2015.

The fees for the course are as follows;

FGDP(UK) Member - £1,650

Non-members - £1,850

 

‘Can this course be completed through distance learning?’

At present, we do not offer Short Course in Periodontics as a distance learning course; this part-time course in two parts must be attended in person at St George’s University Hospital: https://gapssimulation.com/

‘I am an international student; can I apply for Short Course in Periodontics?’

Yes, the Short Course in Periodontics welcomes international students.

A candidate must have registration with the UK General Dental Council (GDC) or the equivalent body in their own country.
