Dentists in the UK have a statutory duty to reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance by ensuring appropriate use of antibiotics. Antimicrobial Prescribing in Dentistry: Good Practice Guidelines, 3rd Edition gives clear and practical advice on when to prescribe, what to prescribe, for how long and at what dosage.
The third edition was published in December 2020 by the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) and the Faculty of Dental Surgery. It updates the 2012 FGDP(UK) version and widens the scope to all of dentistry, including management of oral and dental infections by specialists and trainees in hospital environments. It also covers prescribing to both adults and children.
FGDP(UK) has also co-produced a free Antimicrobial Prescribing Self-Audit Tool , which can be used in conjunction with this guidance and is available on our antimicrobial prescribing page.
