Prof Mike Mulcahy BChD FFGDP (UK) FRCS (Hon) FDS MGDS RCS (Eng)

Mike Mulcahy qualified at Leeds University Dental School in 1972. After undertaking house officer appointments in Oral Surgery and Periodontology he entered general dental practice on the South Coast of England in 1973. In 1975 he set up his own practice and within 15 years had expanded it into a six surgery multi-clinic practice called Strand-Dental. Strand-Dental was one of the first practices in the UK to be awarded the industry award of Investors In People signalling the development and training of everyone in the organisation.

Mike was one of 30 dentists selected nationwide by the British Dental Association to become Masterclass Trainers, with a remit to roll out communication and business skills to other practices in the UK.

In 1983 Mike successfully developed his clinical skills and this was recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) with the award of Membership in General Dental Surgery. Mike then became interested in training young graduates and took a part-time post as Vocational Training Adviser in Brighton. Within three years he was appointed Regional Adviser within the London Deanery and became heavily involved in training trainers and other advisers with an initiative helped by Oxford Brookes University.

In 1997 he left his teaching role and was appointed Chief Dental Adviser to BUPA, and when BUPA sold their dental division to Denplan he was retained as an adviser.

In 2005 he sold Strand-Dental to concentrate on his academic and consultancy career, and opened a small dental practice in his home. He has later appointed as a member of the Society of Industrial Leaders at Vista Research, then part of Standard and Poor's.

Mike was elected to serve as Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice UK from 2003 to 2006. He was also awarded the Cottrell prize for services to dentistry and has the rare honour of being awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the RCS for services to the College.

Mike has a long and established career in dental education and examination and was made Professor of Primary Dental Care at the University of Kent. He is an FGDP(UK) Course Director of the Diploma in Restorative Dentistry, and was previously the Course Director of both the MSc in Primary Dental Care and the Masterclass in Facial Aesthetics.
