Trustees appointed to College of General Dentistry

Janet Clarke and Professor Liz Kay have been appointed as Trustees of the Board of the College of General Dentistry.

Janet Clarke MBE MFGDP(UK) graduated from the University of Birmingham Dental School in 1981, and went on to work in general practice and the community dental service throughout the Midlands. She completed a Master’s degree in Community Dental Health in 1989 and was appointed Clinical Director for South Birmingham Community Dental Services in 1991, becoming Associate Director for Community and Hospital Dental Services in Birmingham and beyond by 2015. She chaired the British Dental Association’s Central Committee for Community and Public Health Dentistry for six years until 2008. A member of the team led by Professor Jimmy Steele which published the Independent Review of NHS Dentistry in 2009, she was awarded the MBE for services to dentistry in 2010 and served as President of the BDA in 2011. She was Deputy Chief Dental Officer for England, and Chair of West Midlands Local Dental Network, from 2016-19.

 

Prof Liz Kay MBE FFGDP(UK) leads the MBA in Healthcare at Peninsula Dental School, of which she was the Founding Dean. With a particular interest in inequalities in oral health, she has published over 180 papers and six books, and lectures locally, nationally and internationally on clinical care, dental education, communication and her research. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence’s Topic Expert in Oral Health, and outgoing President of the Oral Health Foundation, she also chairs the Shirley Glasstone Hughes Foundation Management Committee, which oversees the commissioning of research in dentistry. Also Vice Chair of the British Medical and Dental Students Trust, Non-Executive Director of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, and Editor of Evidence-Based Dentistry, she graduated from Edinburgh in 1982, and was awarded a Master’s in Public Health and PhD from Glasgow in 1984 and 1991.

 

The Board of the College of General Dentistry has evolved from the Transition Board, and has a mandate from the elected Board of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP(UK)) to develop the new College, and to make constitutional preparations for the transfer of the FGDP(UK) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

 

Other members of the College Board include dentists Nairn Wilson CBE FFGDP(UK), Ian Mills FFGDP(UK), Mick Horton FFGDP(UK) and Kevin Lewis FFGDP(UK), and Lay Trustees Kate Gregory, Lesley Pan, Duncan Rudkin and Neil Sawbridge.
