Standards in Dentistry being updated

The FGDP(UK) has announced that Standards in Dentistry, its flagship guidance publication for general dental practitioners, is being revised.

Building on the success of the first edition from 2006, and its predecessor Self-Assessment Manual and Standards (SAMS), the second edition will continue to act as a compendium of guidance and standards, covering a wide range of areas of practice relevant to general dental practitioners and their teams.

It will adopt the Faculty’s ‘ABC’ (Aspirational, Basic, Conditional) notation for the grading of recommendations - as can already be seen in Dementia-Friendly Dentistry and the third edition of Clinical Examination and Record-Keeping – and will focus on practitioner processes rather than treatment outcomes, dispensing with descriptions of the ‘unacceptable’.

Under development by a team at Plymouth University Peninsula School of Dentistry, led by Professor David Moles FFGDP, a draft version of the publication has recently been the subject of consultation with a range of FGDP(UK) Board members, Divisional leads and third party organisations, with the final version due for publication later this year.
