The Faculty of General Dental Practice has launched a new Postgraduate Certificate in Restorative and Aesthetic Dentistry.

Building on the success of the Diploma in Restorative Dentistry programme which the Faculty has run since 2005, the new year-long Postgraduate Certificate course will make the programme more accessible, and will be open to dentists immediately on completion of Foundation Training.

The Postgraduate Certificate will deliver the foundation elements of the restorative disciplines, while the Postgraduate Diploma will continue to offer a deeper level of teaching and skills acquisition, with enhanced modules, over a second year.

Both the Certificate and Diploma programmes are designed to complement and minimise time away from practice, with all units consisting of a Friday evening tutorial followed by a Saturday study day. The modules, which are taught in London, include aesthetic dentistry, restoration of implants, surgical periodontics, advanced occlusion, advanced endodontics, fixed prosthodontics and removable prosthodontics.

Both qualifications teach the latest techniques while embracing the importance of aesthetics and a minimally invasive approach, and as with all FGDP courses, a firm emphasis is placed on evidence-based practice.

The new programme offers flexibility and a renewed curriculum, while still being led by the highly regarded Prof Mike Mulcahy and Nick Lewis together with a team of experienced tutors allocated to each student to give personal support.

Those completing the new Certificate will be entitled to use the post-nominal designation Cert Rest Dent RCS Eng and will eligible to enrol onto the second year to complete the Diploma. Those completing the Diploma will be entitled to use the designation Dip Rest Dent RCS Eng, and the qualification will be recognised by the Universities of Plymouth, Kent and Leeds towards the award of an MSc.

The Faculty is holding an Open Day with the course tutors on Saturday 22 June, and applications are now being accepted for admission in September 2019.

FGDP(UK) Members receive discounts of £300 on the Certificate course, £700 on the second (Diploma) year, and an extra £1000 if applying for the Diploma at the outset.
