NHS England has published three new commissioning standards covering restorative dentistry, urgent dental care and dental care for people with diabetes.
The commissioning standard for dental care for people with diabetes aims to “enable the benefits of timely and effective periodontal management on oral health and general health to be realised”.
The commissioning standard for restorative dentistry aims to “offer a standardised framework for local commissioning of specialist and specialised restorative dentistry services”.
The commissioning standard for urgent dental care aims to support “the commissioning of consistent patient-centred urgent dental care services that are aligned with other urgent care services”.
The documents join existing commissioning standards for paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, special care dentistry, oral surgery and oral medicine, conscious sedation in primary dental care, and accreditation of performers and providers of level 2 complexity care.
The full set of commissioning standards, together with an introductory guide for commissioning dental specialities, are available at https://www.england.nhs.uk/primary-care/dentistry/dentistry-publications/#standards.
