National honours for FGDP(UK) Members

The Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP(UK)) congratulates two of its members who received national recognition in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Dr Peter Frost and Fiona Ellwood have both been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM).

Fiona Ellwood is an Affiliate Member of FGDP and one of only two Dental Care Professionals to be awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty, and was awarded the BEM for services to dentistry. A former President of the British Association of Dental Nurses and examiner for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses, she is the Patron and Executive Director of the Society of British Dental Nurses, a Trustee of Dentaid and Chair of the National Oral Health Promotion Group. She is also Vice President of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy, and a Fellow of both the Institute of Administrative Management and the Faculty of Dental Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr Frost has been an FGDP Member since the Faculty’s foundation in 1992, was Director of the South East Thames division from 2006-11, and was a Faculty Research Co-ordinator for 15 years. He receives the BEM for services to the community in Peckham, where he practised from 1969 until his retirement from general dentistry in 2016, and where he has been Chairman of the Peckham Society for 29 years. A former President of the British Society of Gerodontology, he has also been awarded Honorary Membership of the British Society of Prosthodontics and Life Membership of the British Dental Association. He remains involved in research, and is Honorary Senior Specialist Clinical Teacher and dental demonstrator at King’s College London’s Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences.
