GDP Dr Gareth McMorrow discusses the importance of the FGDP(UK) Diploma in Restorative Dentistry to his career.
Having completed the Faculty’s Diploma in Restorative Dentistry 10 years ago now, I can honestly reflect that it was without doubt one of the best career decisions I’ve made and has been the back-bone of my restorative dentistry since.
I have now been a GDP for 16 years, bought multiple practices and tutored 7 VDPs and although experience alone would have helped get me though these stages in my career as a GDP, the Diploma in Restorative Dentistry has given me the core skills to treatment plan with confidence. I will always remember the eureka moment when I started the Diploma, not knowing exactly how much I would learn from yet another dentistry course, with having graduated just 5 years previous I thought I knew it all! How wrong I was! The quality of the tutoring and the course structure was such that, it completely changed my thinking and rewired my dentistry brain to approach cases with thoroughness and greater knowledge of the options I could provide.
In these times, people want the quick fix course or treatments to provide instant results, I would urge every GDP to seriously consider doing this Diploma course as it will enable you with the skills to carry out successful treatments and ultimately have happy patients. One of the best things about the course was having high quality tutoring over the 2 years by the same 2/3 tutors, this longitudinal teaching really compounded the knowledge and skills taught at every session and I would never do a course without this type of consistent teaching.
I am now honoured to be able to use my knowledge and have been teaching newly qualified VDP’s basic treatment planning skills, on the back on the Faculty’s Restorative Diploma. Can’t recommend it highly enough no matter what age or stage you are in your dental career.
