Ian Mills, Dean of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), is calling on FGDP(UK) Members of all ages and backgrounds to help shape the future of the Faculty, the College of General Dentistry and their profession by standing for national office.
Nominations for five regional seats on the National FGDP(UK) Board and future College of General Dentistry Council are open until 2 April, and are open to Full Members or Fellows who live or practise in Wales, Northern Ireland, the West Midlands, or the FGDP’s North East Thames, North West Thames, South East Thames or South West Thames divisional areas. Those elected will serve three-year terms.
The National Board meets three times per year, and sets the strategy and direction for the FGDP(UK), and it is intended that those sitting on the Board when the Faculty transfers to the College of General Dentistry, will become Council Members of the new College.
Sitting on the Board presents FGDP Members with an extraordinary opportunity to influence the direction of the profession and ensure that those in general dental practice are at the heart of national policy development, and the Faculty encourages its Members of all genders, ages and ethnicity both to consider applying and to encourage others to do so.
During his speech at the recent Annual Dinner and Awards, Ian drew attention to the importance of diversity within dental leadership, saying “Social and professional diversity reflects the diversity within our profession, and provides insight into different views, attitudes and beliefs …We need diversity to understand the changing needs of our profession, to connect with new members, and ensure that we continue to be relevant.”
Full Members and Fellows of FGDP(UK) should already have received a call for nominations, with a link to the online nomination form. Candidates have until 5pm on Thursday 2 April 2020 to submit a completed online nomination form, including details of two Full Members or Fellows of FGDP(UK) (from any division) who support their nomination. If you are not in contact with other Members of your local division, please email us at email@example.com by Thursday 26 March 2020 and we will put you in touch with your regional Board member.
Following the closure of nominations, all Full Members and Fellows will be eligible to vote and will receive instructions for online voting by email in late April. Ballots will close on Thursday 28 May and the results will be announced shortly thereafter.
Further details of the elections and a description of the role are available here, and information on eligibility and admission are available in the FGDP(UK) Standing Orders.
