Congratulations to former FGDP(UK) Dean, Russ Ladwa FFGDP(UK), who has been inaugurated as the 134th President of the British Dental Association (BDA).

Throughout his career, Russ has been committed to developing the dental profession and has worked tirelessly to improve standards in patient care and education, taking on a wide range of influential leadership roles, as well as running a successful practice in West London. He was FGDP(UK) Dean from 2009 to 2012, having previously been Vice Dean for two terms (2001-2003), and during his years as a member of the Faculty Board he served on the Research, Education and External Affairs Committees among others. During his tenure as Faculty Dean, Russ was instrumental in promoting and strengthening the wider dental team by involving dental care professionals in the work of the Faculty. He is currently a member of the newly-formed FGDP(UK)-BDA Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Programme Board, set up to identify and address inequality in the dental profession.

In 1990, Russ was appointed as Postgraduate Dental Tutor at Central Middlesex Hospital and was one of first general dental practitioners to be appointed to such a post. He was Chair of both the Federation of London Local Dental Committees and the Dental Vocational Training Authority (2004-2006), and in 2012, was appointed as President of the Odontology section of the Royal Society of Medicine. He has been made an Honorary Fellow by the Faculty of Dental Surgeons (FDS) and has a Certificate of Merit from the BDA.

In a statement setting out his vision as President of the BDA, Russ says that while the coronavirus pandemic will be an influencing factor in his tenure, he will not let it distract him from his wider priorities such as addressing gender and racial inequality within the profession.

We wish Russ every success in his new role, and look forward to working with him for the benefit of the profession and dental patients.
