FGDP(UK) welcomes the announcement of a new Chief Inspector of General Practice

The FGDP(UK) welcomes the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) appointment of Professor Steve Field as Chief Inspector of General Practice.  Professor Field has an impressive track record of raising standards and championing patients as the immediate past Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners and as deputy national medical director responsible for addressing health inequalities.

The FGDP(UK) is encouraged that the CQC have made such a strong appointment at this critical junction, but we recognise that Professor Field is not a dentist and encourage him to make it a priority to engage with the dental profession at the earliest opportunity.

The professional landscape of dentistry is about to undergo radical changes (including new commissioning models, a new contract and direct access to dental care professionals) and we would welcome the opportunity to engage with Professor Field and the CQC to help ensure that a right-touch approach is adopted, protecting patients without placing an unduly onerous burden on the profession.

The FGDP(UK) stands ready to work with Professor Field and the CQC to help strengthen their understanding of dentistry, and to work together in our shared aim of all dental professionals working in general dental practice providing the highest standards of patient care.

Dr Trevor Ferguson, Dean of the FGDP(UK) said “I am aware of Professor Field’s impressive track record in general medical practice and am encouraged by his appointment.  Regulation is vital to ensure appropriate quality standards in all professions. However, it is important that it is implemented in a meaningful way; supporting the profession as well as patients, recognising good practice, and taking corrective action when needed”.

The FGDP(UK) looks forward to a long and fruitful working relationship with Professor Field.
