A team of staff and volunteer Members from the Faculty of General Dentistry (UK) (FGDP(UK)), have been visiting Freshers' Fairs at universities around the country this month, raising awareness about how the Faculty supports dental professionals at each stage of their career and encouraging Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students to register for free Student Membership.

The Freshers’ Fair tour started at Barts Queen Mary, University of London on 18 September, then continued to Freshers’ Fairs at Liverpool University, Kings College London, Leeds University and finished at Cardiff University on 25 September. A busy but rewarding few days that has doubled our student membership community!

The tour was organised by the Faculty’s Member Engagement Manager, Rubana Hussein. Describing the series of events, Rubana commented, "We recognise that dental students are the future of the profession and we’re here to support them from undergraduate level and beyond. Students’ reaction has been great, and many have readily signed up to membership to start making use of their benefits.”

Student Membership of FGDP(UK) is free and has recently been made available to all BDS students throughout their five-year course. Student members benefit from joining a powerful dental community as well as free access to FGDP(UK)’s quarterly journal, PDJ online, support from their local FGDP(UK) Division, and discounts on Guidance and Standards, conferences and events. They also receive a termly, e-newsletter featuring advice and tips about studying and a career in dentistry from other FGDP(UK) Members, as well as dentistry updates and news.

After  graduation, Student Members can become Associate Members for less than £5.50 per month. For early career dentists, Associate Membership offers opportunities to build a professional network, access the latest research and developments, and promote their career through discounted courses, events and other verifiable CPD.
