Congratulations to Faculty Fellow Derek Maguire, who has received an OBE for services to dentistry and the COVID-19 response.
Dr Maguire qualified over 30 years ago from Queen's University, Belfast, and is a general dental practitioner and principal dentist at DJ Maguire & Associates in Portadown. He is also a part-time dental adviser to the Northern Ireland Health and Social Care Board, and a non-executive board member of the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency.
He was awarded Fellowship of the FGDP(UK) by the National Faculty Board in 2017, and received his award at the FGDP(UK) Diplomates Ceremony in March 2018. He also holds Fellowships of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and of the Faculty of Dental Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He is one of four dentists to be recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, which were delayed this year to allow for the inclusion of nominees on the basis of their contribution to the national response to the ongoing pandemic. Professor Simon Wright, Chair of the National Advisory Board for Human Factors in Dentistry, has been awarded an MBE, as have Professor Helen Rodd of Sheffield Dental School and Professor Matthew Walters of Glasgow Dental School.
