Dental practices required to adopt SNOMED

NHS-contracted dental practices in England must adopt SNOMED CT from 1 April 2020.

SNOMED CT is an international information standard for clinical terminology, providing a common language for health terms, and the Department of Health and Social Care has mandated that all NHS services in England use it.

The NHS maintains and distributes SNOMED in the UK, and makes the SNOMED CT UK Edition, including subsets and mappings, available free of charge.

The standard has been deployed to replace Read Codes in GP practices in a phased approach since April 2018, and secondary care, acute care, mental health, dentistry and other community providers are required to use its terminology in patient care systems by 1 April 2020.

All practices in England that hold an NHS contract, and any provider that interacts with the NHS for the provision of a course of treatment, will need to ensure that their practice management systems comply.
