Guidelines for Potential Applicants

Applications are invited for the 2008 BSGDS Scholarship Award, which is administered annually by the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK).

The award, of up to £7,000 for a single project, is for research in primary dental care.

Applications should be submitted in the form of a research protocol. The Faculty is able to offer guidance in the preparation of research protocols, if required.

Criteria

  1. The amount is awarded to a single applicant for a suitable research project into primary dental care.
  2. Applicants should be general dental practitioners of at least four years standing.
  3. The finalised project should be submitted to the Faculty's research journal, Primary Dental Care for possible publication.
  4. It is essential that each application is accompanied by a suitable budget.

Assessment

Applications should be sent to the FGDP(UK) Research Committee. A panel comprising of members of the FGDP(UK) Research Committee and the BSGDS Executive Committee will meet to assess the applications. The name of the successful applicant will be announced by the Chairman of the FGDP(UK) Research Committee. The FGDP(UK)/BSGDS reserve the right to withhold the award if they feel the protocols submitted are not of a sufficiently high standard.

Conditions

Successful candidates will be required to provide an in-depth written report to the Faculty’s Research Committee three times a year. Payment of the award will be staggered over the project duration to ensure appropriate progress is being made from the evidence provided within the reports.

Successful applicants may be required to make a presentation of the completed project to an appropriate audience and to submit an abstract for publication in the BSGDS newsletter. The FGDP(UK) may also consider that applicants should present completed work for publication in the Faculty’s journal, Primary Dental Care.
