Why is the Faculty involved in research?
It is one of the aims of FGDP(UK) to improve the standard of patient care through research. 95% of oral healthcare in the UK is provided in primary care, mostly by general dental practitioners and their teams. To date, very little research has been performed in primary dental centres.
To improve this situation FGDP(UK) has developed an infrastructure throughout the country to provide primary care dentists and their dental teams with local sources of advice on oral healthcare research. A network of Divisional Research Facilitators (DRFs) has been established throughout the UK.

The Faculty is committed to promoting research in general dental practice and has established a database of academic collaborators. If you would like to register your research interests, visit the FGDP(UK) Research Register
One of the recent initiatives has also been to raise the profile of the Faculty amongst primary care researchers, nationally and internationally, with a view to networking and future collaborations. For more information on the Faculty's links, visit the following:

The Faculty is also keen to support dental care professionals (DCPs) on all aspects of research in primary dental care. Click here to find out more.
The three themes, within the long-term development of research at the Faculty are:
- Promoting the Faculty as a body that defines standards based on good research evidence and promulgates them.
- Educating its members to enable them to understand the principles of evidence-informed healthcare and objective decision making and to enable those who wish to, to contribute to the development of the evidence base for oral healthcare through undertaking high quality research.
- Conducting research that helps in the development of the evidence base for primary oral health care and promotes the Faculty as the custodian of standards in this area of health care.
The FGDP(UK)'s research strategy has focussed on identifying research priorities in primary dental care by:
The Faculty has also set up structures to assist members with research, including:
A series of research information leaflets are available to support those interested in research, in addition to the the Research Competencies Framework which sets out the knowledge and skills required for competency in topics relevant to research.
The Faculty studies/projects page also contains information on current research projects being carried out or supported by the FGDP(UK).
Members of the FGDP(UK) can also access the FGDP(UK) Critical Appraisal Pack.

Around 95% of oral healthcare in the UK is provided in primary care but very little research has been performed in primary dental care centres, including general dental practices.
To improve this situation, FGDP(UK) has developed an infrastructure throughout the UK to provide primary care dentists and their dental teams with local sources of advice on oral healthcare research.
