Leadership and Management Competencies
Guidelines for standards in the development of leadership and management in the dental health sector
Without good leadership and management, any system is likely to struggle to be efficient or effective. Dentistry is no different. Leadership and management are important because they affect everything that a provider of dental care does, including the quality of the care delivered, support offered to other providers and the overall success of the system or organisation.
Leadership and management are increasingly important in the delivery of high quality dental care. The dental care delivery system has recently been subject to a great deal of change, such as the transfer of responsibilities for the commissioning of services to primary care trusts. There is now a far greater range of treatment modalities and increasing legislation affecting care provision as well as increased patient expectations. This has meant a greater need for individuals who can demonstrate leadership and management competencies.
Guidelines for standards in the development of leadership and management in the dental health sector provides suggested competencies and guidance for the development of these individuals. Those who may benefit from these guidelines may include employers such as primary care trusts, corporate organisations or dental practices, or dental personnel who wish to develop their leadership and management roles.
