About SiD online

Welcome to the online sections of Standards in Dentistry

Introduction

Standards in Dentistry (SiD) is a comprehensive package of standards and guidelines for all members of the dental team. SiD brings together all previous standards and guidelines in oral healthcare, encompassing those common to both primary and secondary care. The format of SiD combines a printed manual with an online publication, allowing for frequent updates to the information.

Guidelines for Structure and Process in Dental Practice

The information in this section of SiD online is Chapter 4.3.3. of the Standards in Dentistry manual, ie, it forms part of the printed manual. It is intended that readers use this information in conjunction with Chapter 4, 'Guidelines for Structure and Process in Dental Practice', of the printed manual.

Taken together, the online and printed guidelines within Chapter 4 of SiD update the FGDP(UK)'s 2004 publication Current Guidance for General Dental Practice.

As many of the standards included in this online publication are subject to change, it is hoped to update the information on a regular basis to reflect any changes that may have occurred.

The topics included within these online guidelines are:

  • Equipment and facilities
  • Environmental and hazard control
  • Infection control
  • Health and safety
  • Radiography
  • Laboratory
  • Patient records
  • Staff and staff training
  • Medical emergencies
  • Patient information
  • Communication and record-keeping
  • Medico-legal responsibilities and indemnity
  • Practice management
  • Computers and data security
  • Prevention
  • Conscious sedation.

The lists within each topic heading are not exhaustive, nor is there any suggestion that they are all of equal importance, or that all of them apply to every practice. Some are legal requirements, some are proposed as aids to good practice, and some may be viewed as optional as they are not legal requirements.

Updates to the Standards in Dentistry manual

The standards, guidelines and other material that appear in the online part of the SiD package are those that are most liable to change.

Every six months, the online sections of the SiD package will be updated to incorporate any new standards, guidelines and other material that have been introduced since the last update.

Most of the generic clinical standards detailed in Chapter 3.2 of the SiD manual are not likely to change frequently. Should they change, notification will appear in the 'Updates to the Standards in Dentistry manual' area of SiD online, along with details of any updates to other sections of the printed manual, such as changes to the assessments offered by the FGDP(UK) detailed in Chapter 5.
