Revision of Adult Antimicrobial Prescribing guidance
The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) clinical guidance on prophylaxis against infective endocarditis - March 2008
In March 2008, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published new guidance on prophylaxis against infective endocarditis. The evidence reviewed by NICE in the consultation period that preceeded the publication of the latest guidance failed to show that antibiotic prophylaxis is effective, or that there is an association between episodes of infective endocarditis and interventional procedures.
The new guidance recommends that antibiotic prophylaxis should not be given to any patients with structural cardiac defects undergoing dental interventional procedures.
The full guidance can be downloaded below, and can also be found together with a discussion of the relevant evidence at www.nice.org.uk/CG064.
