MSc in Primary Dental Care

AIM

To provide students with the opportunity to assess and raise the standards of patient care through workplace based learning; to critically review outcomes of care delivered through informed research and audit; to enhance skills in clinical and non-clinical disciplines.  It also provides a quality standard to assist Primary Care Trusts wishing to contract with dentists for special interest services.

COURSE CONTENT

Students are required to complete three Level M (Master's level) modules for the Certificate, and select four Level M modules for year 2 (a module in research skills is compulsory if undertaking the MSc). 

TEACHING & ASSESSMENT

Year 1: 13 days of formal teaching and regional face to face tutor group sessions, action-learning sets, e-learning, e-mentoring and self-directed learning.

Year 2: 12 days of formal teaching and as above.

Year 3:  No formal teaching; supervision with dissertation supervisor.

Depending on the module, assessments for the Certificate and Diploma include portfolios of evidence, written assignments, project presentation and clinical cases.  The MSc is assessed by dissertation.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

A degree in a dental profession.  DCPs and GDPs are eligible with a relevant degree.

DURATION

Three years part-time, one year each for the Certificate, Diploma and MSc.

£19,000 non- members

CREDITS

The diploma programme equates to 120 postgraduate credits and fully satisfies the clinical component of the FGDP(UK)'s Career Pathway.  The MSc equates to 180 postgraduate credits.
