FGDP(UK) Diploma in Restorative Dentistry RCS(Eng)

Aim

To enable GDPs to deliver a recognised standard of restorative dentistry in primary dental care.

Course content

Examination, diagnosis and treatment planning; radiographic selection; anatomy and physiology; occlusion; applied dental materials; crown and bridgework; removable prosthodontics. In the second year, participants can take a specific module in either periodontics, prosthodontics or endodontics. 

Teaching and assessment

(a) We have seven modules delivered over 14 units over the two years of the course. The study days consist of lectures, practical exercises, small group teaching and written assignments.You also have to select a special interest module from the 2 available topics. Additional special interest modules can be taken dependant on space and at a cost.

(b) workplace-based training: candidates will produce evidence of cases treated, including case reports, a personal development portfolio and contemporaneous patient treatment records;

(c) self-directed distance-learning component: critical reading and completion of 13 key topic assignments. Participants are assessed on an ongoing basis throughout the programme.

Minimum requirements

Licence to practice dentistry.  Registration with GDC.  
MJDF RCS(Eng) or other postgraduate qualifications are desirable.

Two years part-time.

Credits

This programme equates to 120 postgraduate credits and fully satisfies the clinical component of the FGDP(UK)'s Career Pathway. It also provides a quality standard to assist Primary Care Trusts wishing to contract with dentists for special interest services.  The programme is recognised for entry onto the one year top-up MSc in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Leeds.
