The Curriculum of the Certificate in Minor Oral Surgery

The curriculum is a modern approach to all of the relevant subjects including;

  • Contemporary diagnostic  techniques,
  • Treatment planning,
  • Management of medically compromised patients,
  • Flap design and suturing techniques,
  • Surgical principles and techniques for all routine dento-alveolar procedures including surgical endodontics,
  • Minor soft tissue surgery, 
  • Bone preservation and preprosthetic/implant surgery, 
  • Management of cranio-facial pain,
  • Medicolegal aspects of oral surgery,
  • Asepsis and cross infection control complying with recent guidelines,
  • Management of intra/post operative complications,
  • Record keeping and consent,
  • Risk assessment,
  • Consent,

Emphasis will be placed on minimally invasive surgical techniques to preserve hard and soft tissue for patients considering prosthetic/implant treatment and to reduce post operative morbidity and complications.

The most interesting and relevant Basic Sciences will be incorporated into your learning experience;

Physiology  and Anatomy will be taught in state of the art facilities;

Surgical demonstrations, dissection and practical’s on fresh frozen cadavers have been arranged.

Pharmacology will include the management the anxious patient, pain and infection control and common drug interactions.

Pathology relevant to the general dental practitioner and the awareness of oral mucosal changes and diagnosis of cancer will be emphasised.

The clinical and radiographic differential diagnosis of pathological processes will be discussed along will advice on appropriate use of diagnostic equipment including cone beam scanning.

Communication with  patients and recognition of appropriate cases to refer is imperative.

Each candidate will also be given an opportunity to develop research skills and critical analysis of a recent research article and present this using a Microsoft power point presentation

Completion of the course, in brief, will be recognised with a logbook of 75 oral surgery cases, 5 detailed presentation cases, 2 essays and a final oral examination.
