Fellowship diploma

Major changes to the Career Pathway and Fellowship regulations (as outlined below) have taken place. For more information on these changes please click here to view the FAQ sheet.

The Diploma of Fellowship of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) (FFGDP[UK]) marks the end of the Career Pathway and gives practitioners the opportunity to demonstrate that all that has been learned from a programme of structured continuing education and training has been put into practice, and the practice and practitioner are capable of delivering the highest standards of patient care.

The assessment is candidate-led and evidence-based. Each candidate will be able to collect the evidence they need to demonstrate to the Assessors that have achieved the standards of competence as set out in the curriculum for the Fellowship diploma. This evidence will collectively form a portfolio of evidence, details of which are included in the regulations for the Fellowship diploma.

The Fellowship diploma is open to dentists who have achieved 180 credits on the FGDP(UK)'s Career Pathway, are registered to practise dentistry in the UK, and have normally worked in a primary dental care environment for no fewer than five years.

If you wish to check that a dentist is registered to practice in the UK, you can search the registers of the General Dental Council.

Fellowship by non-clinical assessment

The non-clinical assessment for the Fellowship diploma has been developed to mark the achievements of those not currently practising (and so ineligible to be assessed via the clinical route), but have made exceptional commitment and contribution to primary care dentistry in other ways, such as education, research, leadership, management or innovation. Both methods of assessment, clinical and non-clinical, lead to the award of the same diploma - the FFGDP(UK).
