Members' Area FAQ
Some members have reported problems when logging in to the Members' Area, and some have found that after logging in, they are asked to pay a fee to download articles from Primary Dental Care. Please note that if you are a member of the FGDP(UK), you are not required to pay any further fees to access the journals, and your Athens password, provided with your membership of the FGDP(UK), is the only one required.
The problem can arise because our online publications are hosted by Ingenta, and secured access is enabled on our members' behalf through a referrer URL system. This means that before you are able to view the content, Ingenta check to see which site you have come from. If is an address within the FGDP(UK) members’ area, it recognises you as a subscriber, and you are then able to download the content. If you access Ingenta by any other route, your account may not be recognised.
Below is a troubleshooting guide: please be sure to try these measures if you experience any problems with the referrer URL system.
Athens account expired
Some members have reported that when trying to log in, they receive a message saying that their account has expired. This is because Ingenta uses an authentication system called Athens to check that you are a member of the Faculty, and if you have not used your Athens account for some time then it will expire (unfortunately we are not able to control this as it is directly administrated by Athens). Please note: this does not mean that your Faculty membership has been cancelled.
If your Athens account has expired, please contact Eric Howard on 020 7869 6516 or at library.athens@rcseng.ac.uk, and you will be issued with another.
Previous login details
If you are using a shared computer, Ingenta may falsely register the details of an earlier login. These may be stored on your computer as log files called cookies. To correct this:
- log out of the FGDP(UK) members’ area
- delete the cookies from your computer (in Internet Explorer 7 this is done via Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> General -> Browsing history -> Delete...; if you are using Firefox, go to Tools -> Clear Private Data...)
- log back in.
In most cases this is enough to correct the problem.
Firewalls and anti-virus software
If you have a personal firewall, virus protection, or other internet security software (such as those provided by Norton or McAfee) it could be that this is stopping the Ingenta site from 'seeing' where you have come from, and the nature of the referrer URL system means that it will only work when you log in via the members’ area (entering your College Athens details on the Ingenta site itself has no effect). This is particularly true when using shared PCs, which typically have tighter security settings.
The way around this is to change your firewall/security settings on your PC to allow referrer information to be passed between the FGDP(UK) and IngentaConnect sites. If you are using an institutional PC, please contact your system operator to check the settings.
Further assistance
If you have tried all of the above, and are still having problems logging in, please contact the Faculty staff at fgdp@rcseng.ac.uk.
