Aims

This programme, developed jointly by the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) and Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), is designed for primary care dentists wishing to further enhance their skills in orthodontics and/or for those wishing to develop a special interest in orthodontics.

The training programme, leading to a recognised diploma in orthodontics for primary care dentists, provides a quality standard to assist Primary Care Trusts wishing to contract with dentists for special interest services. There may also be the potential for practitioners to progress to an MOrth and specialisation.

Training structure

The training programme will take place over a three-year period with academic teaching, distance learning and clinical supervision in the workplace. One clinical session per week of supervised clinical teaching will be provided throughout the three years.

Course components

The programme will comprise a total of 120 postgraduate credits; each credit constitutes 10 hours of contact or distance learning. The credits can be transferred to the FGDP(UK)'s Career Pathway, a career development framework that leads to the Fellowship of the Faculty, the FFGDP(UK).

The syllabus includes:

  • Core skills
  • Core orthodontic subjects
  • Clinical orthodontic subjects
  • Orthodontic techniques
  • Treatment procedures and multidisciplinary care
  • Management of oral health

Venue
