Course Applications
Applications for the Leeds course starting in September 2010 are open until 3 September 2010.

Applications for the London course starting in February 2011 are now open. The closing date for the Faculty to receive applications is 15 October 2010.
Aim
The aim of this diploma is to provide education and training for general dental practitioners to enable them to practise implant dentistry to a high standard in the best interest of the patient.
Course components
There are three course components:
- Contact learning component: 16 interactive units with practical surgical exercises
- Clinical component: evidence from workplace-based training
- Distance learning: critical reading and completion of assignment topics.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the dentist would have gained the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to:
- Define the treatment that is most suitable for the patient and to plan all stages of treatment and bring them to a successful conclusion.
- Communicate effectively with the patient outlining the benefits of the treatment proposed.
- Carry out any procedures required to augment any deficient sites within the capabilities of the clinician.
- Carry out surgical and restorative aspects of implant therapy, providing the patient with the aesthetic and functional restorations to a high degree of predictability.
- Monitor and maintain the treatment that has been completed for the patient.
Accreditation
Successful clinicians will be accredited by means of an RCS Diploma, which should provide an acknowledged standard for patients, health authorities, insurance agencies, teaching institutions and government bodies.
The diploma can also be upgraded to an MSc by a further 60 credits of flexible learning/research in association with the Institute of Dentistry and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Venues
Candidates can choose to study for the diploma at one of two centres - The Royal College of Surgeons
of England or Leeds Dental Institute. However, some of the components will require
travel to universities in Europe to complete specific topics.
