Course components

There are three course components:

  • Contact learning component: 16 interactive units with practical surgical exercises
  • Clinical component: evidence from workplace-based training
  • Distance learning: critical reading and completion of assignment topics.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the dentist would have gained the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to:

  • Define the treatment that is most suitable for the patient and to plan all stages of treatment and bring them to a successful conclusion.
  • Communicate effectively with the patient outlining the benefits of the treatment proposed.
  • Carry out any procedures required to augment any deficient sites within the capabilities of the clinician.

Accreditation

Successful clinicians will be accredited by means of an RCS Diploma, which should provide an acknowledged standard for patients, health authorities, insurance agencies, teaching institutions and government bodies.

The diploma can also be upgraded to an MSc by a further 60 credits of flexible learning/research in association with the Institute of Dentistry and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry.
